Judge Allows Google to Keep Its Ad Tech Business

A federal judge said Google can keep its advertising technology business as is. She turned down the Justice Department's request to split the company's ad tools. The decision came on a Wednesday in early September.

Back in April 2025 the same judge found that Google had built a monopoly in two parts of the ad market. She said the company used contracts and tech ties to lock in power over publisher ad servers and ad exchanges. The judge also said Google hurt publishers, rivals and people who read online ads by removing useful features and imposing strict rules.

Google's top regulatory officer welcomed the outcome, saying the court protected tools that help small businesses reach customers. A spokesperson for the Justice Department said they were happy the judge ordered meaningful relief, even though the breakup was not required.
