The Justice Department recently made some changes to a court document about Taylor Taranto, a man from Washington state who was found guilty of making threats and having weapons. The original document mentioned former President Donald Trump and the January 6 Capitol attack, but these references were taken out in the updated version.
This change happened just after the two prosecutors who wrote the first document were put on leave. People are now wondering if the Justice Department is being careful or if they are giving in to political pressure. The case is important because it shows how the department handles cases that are connected to big political events.
The updated document was filed on October 29 in a Washington D. C. court. It removed parts that talked about Trump posting Obama’s address on social media and Taranto sharing it. The earlier version also said Taranto was part of the group that stormed the Capitol on January 6, but this part was also removed.
Two prosecutors, Carlos Valdivia and Samuel White, were put on leave after the first document was filed. The Justice Department has not said why they were put on leave. The new version of the document was filed by senior officials and still asks for a 27-month prison sentence, but it does not link Taranto’s actions to Trump or the Capitol attack.
Both versions of the document describe how Taranto drove to the area where the Obamas live in June 2023 and caused a big disruption. He also made threats against federal buildings and officials. Agents found two guns and lots of ammunition in his car. The document says Taranto’s actions were part of a bigger plan to intimidate the government and officials.
The Justice Department is still asking for a 27-month prison sentence for Taranto. His sentencing is set for Friday. Inside the department, officials are likely reviewing what happened with the prosecutors. Outside, some lawmakers may look into whether the changes were made for political reasons.
