A former deputy, Sean Grayson, is about to face a jury for a serious charge: murder. This all started on July 6, 2024, when Grayson shot and killed Sonya Massey in her own home. The trial is moving to Peoria, Illinois, to avoid too much media attention. There's a video from a body camera that shows what happened. Massey begged Grayson not to hurt her. He said he didn't want to hurt her either. But things got tense. Grayson saw a pot of boiling water and said they didn't need a fire. Massey poured the water into the sink and said something about rebuking him. Then, Grayson threatened to shoot her. She apologized and hid her face. When she moved, Grayson shot her three times in the face. She died from the gunshot wounds. Grayson said he was scared for his life. But others, like attorney Ben Crump, who represents Massey's family, say it was unnecessary force. They point out that Massey had mental health struggles. Prosecutors also say Grayson stopped his partner from helping Massey after she was shot. The judge decided to let the body camera footage be used in the trial. This footage is from Grayson's partner's camera because Grayson didn't turn his own camera on until after the shooting. The Illinois State Police reviewed the case and said Grayson wasn't justified in using deadly force. He was fired from his job as a deputy after he was indicted. Grayson has been in jail waiting for his trial. His lawyers said he has stage 3 colon cancer and asked for him to be released before the trial. But prosecutors said he acted impulsively and can't be trusted. The court decided to pause the release decision. Before becoming a deputy, Grayson was discharged from the U. S. Army for serious misconduct. He also had two DUI charges. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a new law inspired by Massey's death. This law makes it harder for people with bad histories to become police officers. Massey's son said this law means a lot to him and his family.
