Justice Sotomayor questions why similar cases get different outcomes
Louisiana, USATue Mar 31 2026
The Supreme Court recently decided not to revisit a Louisiana murder case where James Skinner claims prosecutors hid important evidence. Skinner, convicted in 2001, argues his situation closely matches another case from 2016. In that earlier case, the same court overturned a similar conviction because of withheld evidence. Yet this time, the court chose to let Louisiana’s ruling stand.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out a serious issue in her response. She noted that two people accused of the same crime shouldn’t face different outcomes just because courts interpret rules differently. The phrase on the court building says “Equal justice under law, ” but Sotomayor wonders if that promise holds when cases look alike but get treated differently. Skinner remains in prison while another person in a nearly identical case walks free.
This isn’t just about one case. It raises questions about how fairly the justice system applies its own rules. If the Supreme Court sets a standard, shouldn’t lower courts follow it consistently? Otherwise, people might lose faith in the system, thinking outcomes depend on luck rather than fairness.
