In a twist that has left many scratching their heads, a Nigerian court decided to push back the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu until Monday. This happened because Kanu, the head of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra group, said he couldn't defend himself properly. Why? His old legal team left, and they took his case files with them.
Kanu told the court that without his files, he couldn't move forward. He also asked for some weekend visitors to help him get ready for his defence. The court said yes, and even told the Department of State Services to let these visitors in. Kanu has a list of 23 witnesses ready, including two from the U. S.
The judge, Justice James Omotosho, made it clear that the trial will resume on Monday, but there's a catch. The defence only has six days to present their case, and no extensions will be given. Kanu is facing serious charges related to his push for southeastern Nigeria to break away. He says he's done nothing wrong.
This whole situation raises some big questions. How will Kanu manage without his old legal team? Will his new visitors and witnesses be enough to help him? And what does this delay mean for the future of his trial?
