Kicking Stereotypes: Willmar's Soccer Team Unites Through Adversity

In the small town of Willmar, Minnesota, a high school soccer team has become a haven for young players facing tough challenges. These players, hailing from diverse backgrounds, find solace and unity on the field, away from the harsh realities of immigration debates and societal pressures. The team's junior varsity coach, a Guatemalan immigrant, had to step down due to work permit issues. This left a void, but the team rallied together, using soccer as a way to cope and connect. Luis Gomez, the goalkeeper and the coach's younger brother, emphasized the team's bond, stating, "We're brothers. We're meant to be on this team. Everyone is so connected, because we were all raised in Willmar. " The players on the Willmar soccer team come from various countries and have unique stories. Some are Karen refugees who fled to the mountains, while others are Latino kids whose parents sought better opportunities. Somali players, born in Willmar, navigate between their parents' traditions and American small-town life. They are disheartened by negative stereotypes that paint immigrants as criminals. Jeff Winter, the team's coach, understands the heavy burdens his players carry. Having taught and coached in Ecuador and Ukraine, he is proud of his team's resilience. Instead of dwelling on their problems, the players focus on bonding over meals at La Manzanita Honduran restaurant, video game tournaments, and their shared love for soccer. Senior Hector Robles acknowledged the constant fear of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and the worry about their parents' status. He noted, "Lots of people don’t understand the problem because it doesn’t affect them. The people who do understand, they don’t speak about it out loud. You just shut up and live your life. " Hermis, the team's top player, dreams of playing college soccer. His exceptional skills and field vision make him a standout player, but attracting scouts to Willmar is challenging. Despite a heartbreaking loss in a crucial game, Hermis remained optimistic, saying, "You lose and you win. You can’t do anything about it. It’s a new chapter now. On to college. " After the season, the team continued to support each other. They enjoyed meals together, celebrated their achievements, and looked forward to the future. Coach Winter, reflecting on his players' resilience, felt a deep sense of pride and concern for their well-being.
