Kids' Ankle Strength and Flexibility: What Really Matters

Not specifiedThu Aug 27 2026

A new study looked at 196 healthy kids between 5 and 10 years old. The researchers wanted to see how foot shape, joint flexibility, and muscle strength connect in young children. They used several tests to check each factor. The Foot Posture Index measured foot shape. The Beighton score checked overall joint flexibility. The Lower Limb Assessment Score and Foot and Ankle Flexibility Index looked at leg-specific flexibility. Ankle movement was tested with a lunge test. Muscle strength was measured using hand-held devices.

The results showed something surprising. General joint flexibility did not link to ankle strength. Foot shape also did not connect to muscle power. Even ankle movement range did not predict strength levels. Only one type of flexibility mattered: leg-specific hypermobility. This showed a weak link to ankle strength.

After adjusting for age, sex, and body mass index, most links disappeared. The remaining connections were small. This means other factors likely play bigger roles in child development.

One interesting finding stood out. Hypermobile kids had higher relative ankle strength when adjusted for body weight. This suggests joint looseness might affect how strength develops. But the effect was minor.

Previous research studied these traits separately. This study combined them. The mixed results show how complex child motor development really is. More research is needed to understand these relationships fully.
