Mayor of Kingstown's fourth season is off to a thrilling start, with episode two raising the stakes even higher. The show has quickly replaced the characters lost in the previous season, and this time, it didn't hold back when it came to shocking deaths. In this episode, one of the most important supporting characters meets a brutal end, leaving the main character, Mike, in a tough spot.
Mike's attempt to reason with the new prison warden, Nina Hobbes, fails miserably. Not only does he lose the argument, but he also loses Carney, his last loyal ally inside the prison. Things get even more complicated when Cortez, who tried to eliminate Bunny in the first episode, kills Carney at his own home. This suggests a possible connection between Cortez and the warden's right-hand man, David Torres.
The tension in this season is sky-high, with formidable threats like Callahan and Frank Moses adding to the chaos. Meanwhile, Cindy Stephens, an innocent newcomer, gets entangled in Mike's plans. She agrees to keep an eye on Kyle, despite her lack of experience. Additionally, Ian's past mistake with Charlie is catching up to him, thanks to the virtuous Assistant DA Evelyn.
Mayor of Kingstown has consistently improved with each season, and the fourth season might just be its best yet. The writing is sharp and smooth, with multi-layered plots and riveting character arcs that create natural conflict. What makes this season so gripping is the widespread threat that Mike faces from all angles, both inside and outside the prison. Without Kyle's backup, Mike is more vulnerable than ever.
Mike's convictions drive the series forward, with a mix of noble intentions and self-preservation. He's a great TV fixer, and this season, he's even better without Iris, his usual Achilles heel. If Ian gets pinned for the Charlie incident, Mike will be at his lowest point in the series so far. Given the direction of this season, that seems to be exactly where Mike is headed.
Mike faces no immediate danger after two episodes, but there's definitely something brewing between him and the true "big bad" of this installment – Nina Hobbs. The way Carney was killed suggests a possible connection to the Colombians, but it's more likely that Torres and Hobbs are involved in some hidden corruption. Hobbs may not be as virtuous as she seems, and her track record of cleaning up messy prisons might not come from sweeping reform. She might already be connected to the criminal underworld.
Torres and Cortez might be working for Hobbs, who's calling the shots inside and out. This means that she could have put out the hit on Bunny and Carney. Hobbs did tell Carney that she and Torres were prepared to handle their wards by any means necessary. Perhaps killing Carney was the means, and the end is snuffing out Mike.
