Lightdash, a company that offers a business intelligence (BI) platform, has recently secured funding to incorporate AI into their open source tool. This platform, which is an alternative to Google’s Looker, allows businesses to train AI analysts tailored to specific team use-cases. This means anyone in a company can easily query and analyze business data without needing to be an expert in SQL. The company, which is four years old, has raised $11 million in a Series A funding round led by Accel.
Lightdash is built using dbt (data build tool), an open source command-line tool that helps transform raw data into structured datasets using SQL. The company, originally known as Hubble, shifted its focus from testing data quality to integrating BI tools after identifying the need. Now, they offer a platform that serves both non-technical and technical users. Non-technical users can access the visual components through an interface, while technical users can build custom workflows in the backend.
The latest feature from Lightdash enables team members to ask natural language questions about their company’s data and receive relevant insights. For instance, the finance team can interact with an AI analyst that only has access to relevant data. This interaction can shorten the time it takes to get insights, whether in the form of a chart, spreadsheet, or dashboard.
One of the challenges with using generative AI in enterprises is data security. However, Lightdash ensures that its AI analyst uses the same API as its standard product, meaning companies don’t face additional risks. The AI analyst mainly uses metadata for analysis, and companies can control what information they share with the AI. They can also choose their preferred LLM provider, which can help alleviate concerns about sensitive data.
Since its commercial launch two years ago, Lightdash has expanded its services to include a hosted cloud version of its open source product. Over 5,000 teams now use the open source product, often as a starting point before upgrading to the commercial edition. The company has seen significant growth, with revenues increasing seven-fold in the past year. They have notable customers like Workday, Beauty Pie, Hypebeast, and Morning Brew.
With the new funding, Lightdash plans to expand its team and product offerings, including new features like the AI analysts. The team, currently split between Europe and the U. S. , consists of 13 members. Besides Accel, the Series A round included participation from Operator Partners, Shopify Ventures, Y Combinator, and several angel investors.
