The Maldives has made a big move to protect its people's health. Starting last Saturday, anyone born after January 1, 2007, can't buy or use tobacco products. This means that today's teens and younger kids will never be able to legally smoke in the Maldives, no matter how old they get.
This new rule is part of the Maldives' plan to create a healthier future. The government wants to stop tobacco use before it starts. The ban affects everyone in the country, including tourists. If a shop sells tobacco to someone who is too young, they could face a huge fine of 50, 000 rufiyaa, which is about $3, 200.
The Maldives is also strict about e-cigarettes and vaping. The country already has a complete ban on importing, selling, and using these devices. If someone is caught vaping, they could be fined 5, 000 rufiyaa, or about $320.
Only one other country, New Zealand, tried a similar ban, but it was repealed in 2023. The United Kingdom also thought about doing something like this.
Some people might wonder if this ban will work. Will it stop young people from smoking, or will they find other ways to get tobacco? It's hard to say, but the Maldives is taking a strong stand to protect its people's health.
