The excitement is building for college basketball fans as Selection Sunday approaches. This is the day when 68 teams will find out if they've made the cut for the big tournament. The season has been full of surprises, with no clear favorite to take home the championship title. The top seeds are already making headlines. Auburn, Duke, and Houston are expected to be the top contenders. Auburn, in particular, has an impressive record with 16 Quad 1 wins, making them a strong candidate for the overall top seed. Duke and Houston have also shown their strength by reaching their conference championship games. Houston might edge out Duke for the No. 2 spot due to the stronger Big 12 conference.
The fourth top seed is still up for grabs. Florida is currently in the lead with key road wins against Auburn and Alabama. Tennessee is also in the mix with 11 Quad 1 wins and a victory over Auburn in the SEC semifinals. The battle for the final top seed will be intense, and the outcome will depend on the results of the upcoming games.
The bubble teams are where the drama unfolds. Last year, the Big East conference had a tough time with only three teams making it to the tournament. This year, North Carolina is under the spotlight. The Tar Heels had high expectations but struggled, winning only once in 13 Quad 1 games. Xavier is another team to watch. They ended the regular season on a high note with six straight wins but lost a big lead to Marquette in the Big East Tournament. Their Quad 1 record is poor, but they have notable wins over projected tournament teams. Indiana and Texas are also in the mix, each with their own set of wins and losses. The competition is fierce, and every win counts.
The issue of bid-stealers adds another layer of complexity. If Memphis doesn't win the AAC crown, that could mean one fewer spot for other teams. Boise State is another team to keep an eye on. They have quality wins but also have some losses that could hurt their chances.
Locally, it's been a mixed bag. Seton Hall had a tough season with a record number of losses, and Rutgers didn't make it to the tournament despite having top NBA draft picks. St. John's, however, had a strong season with their best regular season in 25 years. They are likely to be a No. 2 seed and could start in Providence. However, staying close to home for the second weekend might not be feasible. The Red Storm are projected as the last No. 2 seed, and it's unlikely they'll get a geographic advantage in a potential Elite Eight matchup. More likely scenarios have them in either the West or South regions.
