Maryland is making waves with a plan to redraw its political boundaries. Governor Wes Moore is leading the charge, saying the state won't just sit back while others make changes. He's not alone in this idea. Other states, like Texas and Florida, have already started redrawing their maps. Moore believes Maryland should do the same.
The goal? To make sure the state's political representation is fair. Right now, Democrats hold eight out of nine House seats. The plan is to focus on the one seat held by a Republican. But not everyone is on board. Some Democrats think this is a risky move.
Senate President Bill Ferguson is one of them. He thinks the legal risks are too high and the timeline is too tight. He also believes Democrats don't need to change the system to win. But Moore disagrees. He sees this as a fight for democracy.
Moore says fighting for democracy is never risky. He and Ferguson agree there's a crisis, but they differ on how urgent it is. Moore is ready to take action, while Ferguson wants to play it safe.
The commission leading this effort is made up of powerful Democrats. They include Senator Angela Alsobrooks, House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones, and former Attorney General Brian Frosh. The commission is chaired by Alsobrooks, a close ally of Moore's.
Maryland's law says the state Assembly draws the congressional maps. Democrats have a supermajority there, so they have the power to make changes. But Moore would need to call a special session for this to happen.
Meanwhile, California's Governor Gavin Newsom has also been pushing for redistricting. His plan, known as Prop 50, passed with more than 60% of the vote. Newsom says Texas inspired him to take action.
