Measles alert in California after traveler visits busy spots

San Francisco Bay Area, California, Jose, Santa Clara County, USAMon Jun 15 2026
Health officials recently tracked a measles case linked to a traveler who passed through San Francisco Airport and two San Jose stores. The adult, from Santa Clara County, was infectious while moving through the airport’s international terminal on Thursday morning. Later, between 8 and 10 p. m. , they stopped by Trader Joe’s and International Halal Market in San Jose. Anyone near these places at those times might have been exposed. Measles spreads easily, so symptoms like fever, cough, or rash could appear within a week to ten days. Unvaccinated people are especially at risk and should stay home, avoid crowds, and watch for signs for up to three weeks. Health experts also warn pregnant women, babies, and those with weak immune systems to check with a doctor if they were nearby. If symptoms show up, calling a healthcare provider first helps stop further spread.
California hasn’t seen this many measles cases in seven years. By June 8, the state had 49 cases—almost twice as many as in all of 2025. Most cases involve unvaccinated people, and over 80% are kids under 19. Even though the Bay Area has high vaccination rates overall, some groups still miss key shots. Experts say vaccines are the best defense against measles. They help control outbreaks even when exposures happen. Local health teams are working with state and federal agencies to track anyone who might have been in contact with the infected traveler. Santa Clara County has issued warnings like this before, showing measles keeps popping up, often through international travel or low vaccination rates. Nationally, measles is making a comeback too. Last year, a big outbreak in West Texas led to over 750 cases, many hospitalizations, and even deaths among unvaccinated patients.
