Measles Makes a Comeback: Why Are Vaccination Rates Dropping?

Measles is back with a vengeance. After years of decline, cases are soaring worldwide. This is a big problem because measles is highly contagious. The World Health Organization (WHO) is sounding the alarm. They say the progress made over the years is now at risk.
The WHO reports that 59 countries faced major measles outbreaks last year. That's nearly three times more than in 2021. Even places that had almost eradicated the disease, like the U. S. and Canada, are now seeing outbreaks. The U. S. has reported over 1, 700 cases this year alone. That's the highest number since the country declared measles eliminated in 2000.
Why is this happening? The main reason is falling vaccination rates. Globally, only 84% of children received the first dose of the measles vaccine in 2024. Even fewer, just 76%, got the crucial second dose. This leaves millions of children vulnerable. The WHO warns that measles is exploiting these gaps in protection.
Several factors are contributing to this decline. The pandemic disrupted routine vaccinations. Misinformation about vaccines is also spreading. Additionally, reaching families in conflict zones is challenging. Funding cuts are making the situation worse. The WHO fears that without proper funding, the immunity gaps will widen. This could lead to even larger outbreaks in the future.
Despite these setbacks, some places have made progress. Cabo Verde, Seychelles, and Mauritius eliminated measles this year. Twenty-one Pacific Island nations eliminated both measles and rubella. These successes show what's possible with effective vaccination programs.
The WHO stresses that every measles death is preventable with routine vaccination. They urge countries to prioritize immunization efforts. Without immediate action, the world risks losing the hard-won gains against this deadly disease.
