A recent outbreak of measles in Texas has taken a tragic turn, with a second death reported. The victim was an eight-year-old girl named Daisy Hildebrand, who passed away from measles pulmonary failure. This news comes as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited the state, where he attended the funeral of the young victim.
The Texas health department confirmed the death on Saturday night, although it occurred on Thursday. Daisy was not vaccinated and had no prior health issues. This is the third measles-related death in the U. S. this year, with the first two occurring in Texas and New Mexico. The last measles death in the U. S. was in 2015.
Measles cases in Texas have been rising since mid-January, with 481 cases reported by early April. Fifty-six people have been hospitalized due to the virus. The outbreak is largely affecting unvaccinated Mennonite communities in rural areas of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and possibly Kansas.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been a vocal critic of vaccines in the past, but during his visit to Texas, he surprisingly endorsed the MMR vaccine as the best way to prevent measles. However, he also promoted unproven treatments for the virus. He claimed that two doctors had successfully treated hundreds of Mennonite children with a combination of aerosolized budesonide and clarithromycin. This is concerning, as there is limited evidence supporting the use of steroids for measles, and antibiotics do not treat viral infections.
Previously, Kennedy has suggested using cod liver oil as a measles treatment, which is not supported by medical evidence. Vitamin A deficiency is rare in the U. S. , and giving children excessive vitamin A can lead to toxicity. It is crucial to rely on proven medical treatments and vaccines to combat measles and protect public health.
The current measles outbreak in the U. S. has already surpassed last year's numbers and could potentially exceed the 2019 high. This is a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination and the dangers of misinformation. The U. S. came close to losing its measles-free status in 2019, with 1, 274 cases reported that year. It is essential to prioritize evidence-based medicine and vaccination to prevent further outbreaks and deaths.
