Michigan Voters to Decide on Corporate Political Spending Ban

A legal challenge has been filed against a Michigan ballot measure. The group Protect MI Free Speech says the proposal should not go to voters. They argue the certification process was flawed. This lawsuit could delay or stop the November vote.

The measure is called Michiganders for Money Out of Politics. It would stop big utility companies like DTE and Consumers Energy from giving money to politicians. It also blocks firms with government contracts over $250,000 from political spending. Organizers collected more than half a million signatures to qualify.

Senate Democrats chose not to vote on the plan. Leader Winnie Brinks said voters should decide directly. She is also the running mate for the Democratic governor candidate. House Republicans pushed for a legislative vote instead. The House passed the measure with support from both parties. Most opponents were Democrats.

Michigan has a unique rule for citizen-led laws. If both legislative chambers approve, the measure becomes law without the governor's signature. It also stays off the ballot. If lawmakers ignore it, voters decide in November. A public vote makes future changes much harder.

The fight centers on corporate influence in state politics. Supporters say utilities and contractors have too much power. Critics claim the ban limits free speech rights. The court will rule on the lawsuit soon. Meanwhile campaigns on both sides are gearing up for a possible November showdown.
