Michigan's Early 2028 Democratic Primary Shifts Midwestern Power

Michigan is set to hold the Democratic presidential primary on February 22, 2028. The date places the state as the first Midwestern contest in the nomination calendar. It follows South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire and New Mexico, and comes before Virginia.

Political scientists say the early slot gives Michigan voters outsized sway. Professor David Dulio of Oakland University warned that campaigns will pour resources into the state. Expect a flurry of rallies, ads, and voter outreach.

Former President Donald Trump is barred from running again, so the field will likely be crowded with Democratic hopefuls. Recent weeks have seen visits from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez.

State leaders praised the new schedule. Democratic Party chair Curtis Hertel Jr. said Michigan’s role will test candidates early. Rep. Debbie Dingell highlighted the state’s diverse electorate, noting that Trump narrowly won Michigan by two points in 2020.
