A big change happened in Middletown's schools. The superintendent, Alberto Vázquez Matos, got fired. This wasn't about his recent DUI trouble in Florida. Instead, it was because he forgot to renew his superintendent license with the state.
The school board met in private for almost two hours. After that, they said his contract had a rule about keeping his license up to date. Since he didn't, they had to let him go. This wasn't a quick decision. The board had been thinking about it since November. They even put him on paid leave then.
Now, the board needs to find someone new. They'll meet again to pick a temporary superintendent while they look for a permanent one.
Back in July, Vázquez Matos was arrested for DUI in Florida. He was driving without taking a breathalyzer test. He's not guilty yet, and his court date is coming up. But that's not why he lost his job.
He had been working with the school district since 2021. First as acting superintendent, then permanently in 2022. His lawyer hasn't said anything about the DUI case yet.
It's a reminder that even small mistakes can have big consequences. Keeping paperwork in order is just as important as doing the job right.
