Let's start with why the trip to Samoa was organized in the first place. In 2019, Samoa found itself in the grips of a measles outbreak that took 83 lives, a significant toll for a country with a population of only 200, 000. Now, picture this: Anti-vaccine influencers from nearby New Zealand organized the visit. Robert Kennedy Jr. was invited to introduce a medical informatics system.
Now, some might say the trip was about digitalizing health records. But did it create a health disaster? They claim Kennedy’s role was to modernize the health system.
Samouan officials thinkKennedywas doing more. The Samoan public health director believes that the death toll could have been because of misinformation. The Director-General of Health Dr. Alec Ekeroma challenged the claim that most of the measles deaths were not from measles in Samoa. Now anyone who digs deeper into the story might believe that Ekeroma was not the health director during the outbreak, but he confirmed that most of the facts given by his predecessor were real. Also, as per Dr. AECeroma, the measles outbreak was a disaster that could have been prevented, and was not unusual.
Many people were displeased with Kennedy's misinformation, including Dr. Ekeroma, and many other doctors. Kennedy claimed that measles may not have caused the 83 deaths, but Dr. Ekeroma stated that Kennedy's statement was not factually correct. He also mentioned that Kennedy and his associates claimed they were there to help introduce a medical informatics system.
It's important to note that Kennedy did not seem to acknowledge the widespread death toll in Samoa due to measles. He stated that measles was not the cause. Samoan officials are not happy with this andDr. Ekeroma was displeased. If he had been in charge, this would have never happened, as his words were not to blame for the anti-vaccine movement. Plus, if his words were to be followed, he would control the U. S. vaccine funding.
Not everyone was impressed by Kennedy's visit. Dr. Ekeroma was not impressed. Dr. Ekeroma reacted to Kennedy’s misinformation with a lot of criticism.
If Kennedy's appointment to the top U. S. health official was to happen, it would be a danger to Samoa and other similar nations, Dr. Ekeroma said. The Samoan government did not heed Kennedy's advice. They resumed their vaccine campaign, and now measles vaccines are mandatory for children.
