NASA’s Science Budgets Face Big Cuts, Even After Congress Says No
Colorado, USAMon May 25 2026
Congress chose to keep NASA’s overall spending flat for 2027, but it still trimmed the agency’s science arm by a full $1. 3 billion, shrinking the Science Mission Directorate from $7. 3 billion to $6 billion. The decision means a 17% cut in the programs that support research at Colorado’s universities and businesses.
The White House had wanted to slash NASA’s discretionary budget from $24. 4 billion to $18. 8 billion, a cut that would have hammered science work by more than 46%. Instead the House Appropriations Committee kept the top line unchanged but deepened cuts inside, while giving a $700 million bump to exploration projects that fund human spaceflight.
Colorado’s science community feels the hit sharply. University of Colorado Boulder, which receives almost $738 million in federal research money, runs key missions such as the Parker Solar Probe, Europa Clipper and Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe. A cut would stop those missions from operating, let alone allow new ones to launch. The state’s aerospace economy—home to over 2, 000 firms and more than 55, 000 direct jobs—depends on steady funding for both robotic and human missions.
The state’s leaders argue that predictable federal budgets are essential to keep projects on schedule and to attract talent. Senators and representatives from Colorado have pushed for provisions that protect space‑weather research, modernize communications and keep NASA’s science hardware on the International Space Station.
Yet experts warn that more than 80 science missions could be lost if the proposed cuts are enacted. Older spacecraft can still deliver valuable data, and cutting them would cost society in education, inspiration and technological progress. The Senate’s upcoming budget may offer a chance to restore some funding, but the future of Colorado’s aerospace sector hinges on whether Congress can maintain long‑term support for NASA’s science programs.
