NASCAR racers have a hectic schedule, with 36 race weekends and non-stop practicing. Even legends like Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott spend off-seasons racing on dirt or cart tracks. But 7-time Cup Series champ, Richard Petty, says it's important to enjoy the moment. He suggests, "Enjoy your life a little bit more. " Petty, now 87, has been through it all, from winning races with presidents present to surviving horrific accidents. He knows the pressure, but he also knows the joy of the sport.
Petty's career was filled with milestones, like beating his father's record and winning the Daytona 500. But he also faced tragedies, like his grandson's death in 2000. These experiences taught him to savor every moment. He believes that's what made him successful. He never saw racing as a job, but as a hobby he loved. He says, "You're in that car, and you just become part of the car. "
In the 2024 season, we saw crashes like Josh Berry's at the Southern 500. But Petty reminds us, it's not just about racing. It's about enjoying the journey. He advises, "You sort of. . . I don’t know if you really accepted it. In other words, you didn’t enjoy it as much as you should. Because you were busy looking at what’s coming next. "
