Neil deGrasse Tyson's New Book: Why Science Funding Matters

Neil deGrasse Tyson has a new book coming out. It's called "Just Visiting This Planet: Further Scientific Adventures of Merlin From Omniscia. " This book is a refreshed version of his first work, originally published in 1989. It's filled with fun questions and answers about space, science, and even superheroes. Tyson thinks this book is special because it shows how he started sharing science with the public. He uses a character named Merlin to make learning fun and engaging. Unlike boring answers from chatbots, Merlin's responses are witty and full of personality. Tyson believes this makes science more enjoyable and accessible. Right now, science funding is being cut in many places. Tyson warns that this could have serious consequences. He explains that scientific research is the foundation of many innovations we take for granted. Without government funding, important research might not happen. This could slow down progress and make other countries, like China, lead in science. Tyson also updated the book for modern readers. He removed questions that can easily be Googled and added more fun and imaginative ones. He even got his brother, an artist, to illustrate the book. It's a mix of science, fun, and creativity. In a lighter note, Tyson shared his favorite Halloween candies growing up in New York City. He loved Milky Way and Mars bars. The book will be available in bookstores on Oct. 21, 2025.
