Recent changes in U. S. immigration policies have sparked strong reactions from various groups. The government has decided to pause immigration applications from 19 countries already under travel restrictions. This move comes after a shooting incident involving a national from one of these countries.
The 19 countries affected include Afghanistan, Burma, and others with partial or full travel bans. The U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced this change, citing concerns about safety and the need for better screening.
Critics argue that this policy unfairly targets entire nationalities. Human Rights Watch and other organizations say the move is more about politics than safety. They claim it will harm families and damage the U. S. 's reputation on human rights.
The National Immigrant Justice Center also criticized the policy. They say it is not a response to the recent shooting but rather an opportunity to implement stricter immigration rules. They warn that this policy will put many people in legal limbo.
Uzra Zeya from Human Rights First called the policy cruel and dangerous. She said it fuels xenophobia and dehumanizes people who have already suffered a lot. The Council on American-Islamic Relations urged Congress to investigate these policies, calling them discriminatory and ineffective.
Lawmakers have also spoken out against the new rules. Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American, defended her community. She said most Somali-Americans are citizens and contribute positively to society.
