Starting next year, foreign visitors to some of the most famous U. S. national parks will have to pay more. The National Park Service has announced that international tourists will be charged an extra $100 to enter popular parks like Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. This change is part of a new policy that also excludes foreign visitors from fee-free days, which will now be reserved only for U. S. residents.
The decision comes at a time when national parks are struggling with budget cuts, staff shortages, and damage from the recent government shutdown. The extra money from foreign visitors is expected to help with park maintenance and upgrades.
Under the new rules, the annual pass for foreign tourists will cost $250, while U. S. residents will still pay $80. The Interior Secretary said this ensures that American taxpayers keep enjoying affordable access to the parks, while international visitors contribute more to their upkeep.
The announcement has raised questions about fairness and implementation. Critics argue that the policy might discourage foreign tourists from visiting, which could hurt local businesses that rely on them. On the other hand, supporters say it's only fair that visitors from other countries pay their share to maintain the parks.
The new fees will take effect on January 1. The parks will still have fee-free days for U. S. residents, including Veterans Day. These changes follow an executive order from the President earlier this year, directing the parks to increase fees for foreign tourists.
