Novartis' New Cancer Drug Shows Early Success in Fighting Prostate Cancer

London, ChicagoMon Jun 01 2026
A new experimental drug from Novartis is making waves in the fight against prostate cancer. Early trial results show it shrinks tumors in patients, even those who stopped responding to the company's existing treatment, Pluvicto. The drug uses a different radioactive element called actinium-225, which delivers a more targeted and powerful radiation dose to cancer cells compared to Pluvicto's lutetium-177. In a study of 101 patients, over half of those who had previously used Pluvicto saw their PSA levels drop by at least 50%. PSA is a protein that often increases when prostate cancer is present. The results were even better for patients who hadn't tried Pluvicto yet, with more than 85% seeing PSA levels fall by half. However, the drug isn't without its issues. Many patients experienced dry mouth and severe anemia, side effects that need careful management.
Experts are cautiously optimistic but stress the need for larger trials to fully understand the drug's benefits and risks. Novartis is already planning two major studies to dig deeper. The company is betting big on this type of treatment, known as radioligand therapy, which uses radioactive isotopes to attack cancer cells directly. In fact, nearly 40% of Novartis' cancer research budget is now focused on this area. Other big players like Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb, Bayer, and AstraZeneca are also investing heavily in this new wave of cancer treatments. The key difference with this new drug is the type of radioactive isotope it uses. Actinium-225 delivers a stronger punch over a smaller area, potentially making it more effective. But there's a catch. The current supply of actinium-225 isn't enough to meet growing demand. Some experts worry this could slow down research and treatment. Novartis seems prepared though, having already secured a long-term supply deal with a U. S. -based producer in February. This suggests the company is thinking ahead, planning for a future where this drug could be widely used.
