Oakland’s Iconic Chicken & Waffles Closes After 23 Years

Fans flooded social media with heartfelt posts when they learned the doors would shut. Many called the spot a long‑time town staple. Others expressed genuine sadness over the loss. The emotional response shows how deeply the restaurant resonated with locals.

Derreck Johnson, a third‑generation Oaklander, announced he will step away from the restaurant business. He opened Home of Chicken and Waffles in 2004 on Embarcadero West. The eatery moved to Fourth Street in 2024. It became known for comfort dishes and soul food. The venue hired formerly incarcerated workers and attracted high‑profile guests, including former politicians. Johnson said he feels ready for a new chapter and is excited about what lies ahead.

The closure fits a larger pattern in Jack London Square. Several popular spots have shut down recently, such as Plank, Left Bank Brasserie and Forge Pizza. At the same time, new venues like Reem’s California and Dave & Busters have opened their doors. In a January interview, Johnson described the area as a "ghost town," recalling a more vibrant era when TGI Fridays, El Torito and Barnes & Noble filled the streets. He noted the shift that occurred between 2008 and 2012.

Johnson remains active in community projects. He ran for mayor in 2022 and continues to work with the Black Cultural Zone, an organization that celebrates Oakland’s Black heritage. His dedication to the city and other initiatives shows he is not stepping away from Oakland entirely, just from running the restaurant.
