In the early 20th century, a big collection of old Irish folk remedies was put together. These remedies were used to treat all sorts of illnesses. The people who used them were mostly from the countryside and were born between 1850 and 1925. Some of these remedies were pretty unusual. They involved things like prayers, charms, and other supernatural stuff. Researchers wanted to know why people turned to these kinds of treatments. They thought it might have something to do with how well people understood their illnesses. The researchers looked at 3, 655 different remedies for 35 diseases. They found that when people didn't understand how or why they were sick, they were more likely to use remedies that involved religion or the supernatural. This makes sense because when things are mysterious, people often turn to faith for answers. But here's something interesting: the researchers also found that the severity of the illness didn't make people more likely to use supernatural remedies. Neither did how scary the illness was. This goes against what some people might expect. This study gives us a peek into how people in the past tried to make sense of sickness and health. It shows that faith and science aren't always separate things. Sometimes, they mix together in interesting ways.
