This: Two South Korean fighter jets, the KF-16s, were out for a joint live-fire exercise with the U. S. military. Everything seemed routine until eight bombs were accidentally dropped on a civilian area. Eight people were injured, and the damage was significant. The bombs were supposed to land in a designated firing range, but something went wrong.
The South Korean Air Force quickly stepped in, promising to figure out what happened. They set up a committee to investigate the mishap and assess the damage. The fighter jets were part of a one-day drill, but clearly, things didn't go as planned.
So, what happened? An air force official hinted that one of the pilots entered the wrong coordinates for the bombing site. But why did the second KF-16 also drop bombs on civilians? More investigation is needed to answer that question.
The air force didn't waste time in apologizing. They expressed concern for the injured and promised compensation and other necessary steps. The accident took place in Pocheon, a city near the border with North Korea. This city is home to three major firing ranges used by both South Korean and U. S. militaries.
Pocheon's mayor, Paek Young-hyun, didn't hold back. He called the bombings "awful" and urged the military to halt drills until they can ensure safety. The military listened and suspended all live-fire drills across South Korea. They'll resume once they understand the cause of the accident and can prevent it from happening again.
The disaster response department in Pocheon reported that six civilians and two soldiers were injured. Four of the injured civilians were in serious condition, including two foreigners from Thailand and Myanmar. The damage included three houses, a Catholic church, and a greenhouse, but none were directly hit by the bombs.
This incident raises questions about safety protocols and the potential risks of military exercises near civilian areas. It's a stark reminder that even routine drills can have serious consequences.
