Poland is stepping up its defense game in a major way. Starting this month, the country is launching a new military training program called "At Readiness. " This isn't just any old training program—it's a massive effort to prepare around 400, 000 people by 2026. That's a lot of folks!
Why the sudden push? Well, Russia's invasion of Ukraine has everyone on edge. Poland has been boosting its defense budget like crazy. In fact, it now spends more of its GDP on defense than any other NATO member. The country's military has grown to become the third-largest in the alliance, with 216, 000 personnel. And they're not stopping there—they plan to expand their forces by nearly a third over the next decade.
The "At Readiness" program is open to everyone—schoolkids, working adults, companies, and even seniors. It's voluntary, so no one is being forced into it. The program will cover a range of skills, from basic security to survival training, medical instruction, and even cyber-hygiene classes. Sounds like a pretty comprehensive package, right?
In just November and December alone, they aim to train about 20, 000 people individually. But that's just the start. By next year, they plan to train around 400, 000 people through various forms of training, including group sessions, educational programs, reserve training, and voluntary military service.
The goal here is twofold: to make citizens and communities more resilient and to boost the availability and readiness of reserves. It's all part of a bigger plan announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk back in March. The idea is to build a strong army of reservists, given the heightened security concerns in the region.
So, what's the big picture? Poland is clearly taking its defense seriously. With Russia's actions in Ukraine, it's no surprise that countries in the region are stepping up their game. This program is a proactive move to ensure that Poland is prepared for any potential threats. It's a smart strategy, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.
