Politics and Justice Clash in South Carolina Murder Case
South Carolina, USAWed May 20 2026
South Carolina lawyer Richard Harpootlian says that the tangled legal battles of former attorney Alex Murdaugh are being pushed apart by political pressure.
He told a news program that the case has been twisted by connections to former county clerk Rebecca Hill and the state attorney general, Alan Wilson.
Harpootlian points out that Wilson is running for governor and that the politics around the case are hurting its fairness.
The Supreme Court of South Carolina recently threw out Murdaugh’s double‑murder convictions, saying he did not get a fair trial.
Murdaugh has sued Hill for influencing the jury during his 2023 trial over the deaths of his wife and son.
The court found that Hill’s actions had “improper external influences on the jury. ”
Harpootlian explained that Hill allegedly tried to sway jurors because she wanted a guilty verdict for her book sales and a new house.
He says this story shows how politics can distort justice.
Attorney General Wilson said his office did not know about Hill’s alleged misconduct and disagreed with the Supreme Court’s decision.
He added that prosecutors will retry the case and keep all legal options open, even a death penalty.
Murdaugh is already in prison for financial crimes he pleaded guilty to, with sentences that run at the same time.
Harpootlian believes more should happen, such as a grand jury looking into Hill’s possible tampering.
The case highlights how political ambitions and legal processes can collide, raising questions about fairness in the criminal justice system.
