President-elect Donald Trump's re-election hasn't just brought chaos to the Senate and worries from world leaders—it's also set off alarm bells for another important group: journalists. Trump has a history of threatening the media, and he's not shy about it. He's even bragged about killing the mainstream media. This isn't new, either. Trump has been after news outlets since his 2016 campaign. He's threatened to take away licenses from TV networks that don't give him favorable coverage. And guess what? The First Amendment protects a free press. But Trump seems to think otherwise. He's even suggested jailing journalists and filing lawsuits against media companies.
Presidential historian Allan Lichtman believes online misinformation and disinformation on platforms like Twitter played a big role in Trump's win. Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, and since then, hateful content has surged. Trust in mass media has dropped from 50% to 31% in the last 20 years. Now, rumors say Musk wants to buy MSNBC and CNN. Sound familiar? It should. Back in the 1930s, Germany's minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, used similar tactics to control the media. He censored anything against the regime. Today, our democracy is in a tough spot. Trump's got the Supreme Court on his side, and the Republicans control both the House and Senate. We need to protect our First Amendment rights and the freedom of the press. They might be the last defense we have left.
