Racism on California college campus sparks calls for action
Claremont, California, USA,Sat Apr 25 2026
Pomona College in Claremont, known for its elite liberal arts programs and picturesque campus, is facing scrutiny after multiple racist incidents targeting Black students. Over the past year, reports have surfaced of students shouting racial slurs at athletic events, hosting offensive costume parties, and vandalizing a lounge frequented by Black students. A professor’s use of a racial slur in class and racist posts on the anonymous app Fizz have further fueled concerns.
Black students describe these events as part of a broader pattern, not isolated incidents. Many feel the college’s leadership hasn’t done enough to address racism, despite having several Black administrators. The Black Student Union’s recent Instagram video, which went viral, accused the college of failing its Black students. "I thought moving to California from Indiana would mean less overt racism, " said one student. "Instead, I found myself facing the same ignorance in a new place. "
The college has acknowledged the incidents and is investigating them. Administrators say they’re expanding anti-bias training and working with nearby colleges to promote inclusion. However, students argue that these efforts aren’t enough. They’re pushing for an independent office to handle bias complaints and more transparency in investigations.
Some faculty members support the students’ demands. An Africana studies professor called their activism "meaningful and positive" for creating a more just campus. Yet, students feel the college’s responses often prioritize education over consequences, leaving them frustrated. "We shouldn’t have to wait for change, " said one student. "The time for action is now. "
The situation at Pomona reflects broader trends in higher education. After the Supreme Court banned race-conscious admissions in 2023, some colleges saw drops in Black student enrollment. Pomona’s Black student population fell from 13. 5% in 2022 to just 5% in 2024, though officials note reporting changes make comparisons tricky.
Students see this as a moment for real change. Some meetings with college leaders have left them cautiously optimistic, but they stress that talk must turn into action. Racism, they argue, isn’t just a Pomona problem—it’s a societal issue that colleges must confront head-on.
