Remedy Entertainment just dropped a bombshell at their Capital Markets Day event. Their upcoming game, Control 2, is set to be the studio's first-ever action RPG. This is a big deal because Remedy has mostly stuck to action games, like Max Payne and Alan Wake 2. Sure, they've dabbled with weapon upgrades and perks, but a full-on RPG is new territory for them. This isn't the first time Remedy has gone all-in on a new genre. They've talked up Alan Wake 2's survival horror elements, and that game turned out more like a Resident Evil title with their unique twist. Quantum Break, with its interactive fiction and live-action TV show, is another example. Control 2 being an action RPG could mean big changes for the game. We might see more player customization and other typical RPG features. The studio seems keen on breaking boundaries, not just playing it safe like other game series do. Remedy's CEO, Tero Virtala, has some plans to keep their games top-notch. He wants clear target audiences, managed budgets, and a focus on multiplayer and social elements. But there are risks, of course. Game development costs are skyrocketing, and there are questions about the industry's sustainability. Remedy knows all this but believes it's worth it to create something special.
