Rest as Rebellion: A New Way to Heal in Medicine

Academic MedicineTue Sep 01 2026

Medical training often feels like a nonstop marathon. Long shifts, endless paperwork, and pressure to publish push people to the brink. The culture rewards constant output and treats any pause as weakness. This grind hits minoritized faculty and trainees especially hard, adding racial battle fatigue to ordinary stress.

A framework called Rest is Resistance offers a different path. It draws on ideas from Black liberation, Afrofuturism, and feminist thought. The core idea is that choosing to rest is a deliberate act of self‑preservation. It pushes back against systems that profit from exhaustion.

Rest here means more than sleep. It is a political, spiritual, and cultural statement. By slowing down on purpose, individuals reclaim agency and humanity. This conscious pause challenges capitalism and white supremacy in everyday work life.

Practical steps include setting firm boundaries, scheduling regular downtime, and building community support networks. When health professionals adopt these habits, the whole system can become more sustainable. The goal is a workplace where everyone can thrive without burning out.
