Welcoming back an old friend who's been away for a while but still feels like family. That's what Nico Iamaleava, the star football player, and Zakai Zeigler, the basketball standout, are experiencing. The Tennessee Vols have made a big move by bringing back Mike Keith, a Tennessee Sports Hall of Famer, to be their new voice. Keith isn't new to the game; he's called plays for the NFL's Tennessee Titans for years. But now, he's coming home to the Vols.
The news was shared on the Vols Big Orange Podcast on January 10. They called Keith the "biggest acquisition of the offseason. " Local broadcaster Lucas Panzica confirmed that Keith will be the new voice for both football and basketball games. This hire is a big deal for Tennessee fans.
Bob Kesling, the long-time Voice of the Vols, is retiring in April. His departure opened the door for Keith's return. Keith was the lead sportscaster for the Vol Radio Network from 1999 to 2005 before moving to the Titans. He's been with the Titans ever since, but now he's back where it all started.
Danny White, the Director of Athletics at the University of Tennessee, said that bringing Keith back was a no-brainer. Keith is excited to return, saying goodbye to the Titans won't be easy, but saying yes to the Vols was a no-brainer. He's looking forward to 2025, which promises to be a bright year.
Keith's role won't just be calling plays. He'll also work with the VFL Films content team. With Nico Iamaleava leading the football team to their first playoff appearance and Zakai Zeigler's team leading college basketball with a 14-1 record, things are looking up for the Vols. Keith's return is just the cherry on top.
