Sean Payton, the former coach of the New Orleans Saints, made a triumphant return to the Caesars Superdome. This time, he was on the opposite sideline as the head coach of the Denver Broncos. The Saints, plagued by injuries, couldn't keep up. By the fourth quarter, the stadium was nearly empty, and the remaining fans were booing their team.
The game had a preseason feel, with many rookies on the field for the Saints. But the Broncos were relentless, taking advantage of the Saints' weakened state. They rolled over the Saints 33-10, outscoring them 60-10 in the last six quarters.
The Saints started the game without key players like quarterback Derek Carr, tight end Taysom Hill, and several receivers. By the end, they had lost even more players to injuries, including guard Nick Saldiveri and cornerbacks Paulson Adebo and Marshon Lattimore.
The Broncos didn't just win; they dominated. They outgained the Saints 389 to 271 yards, with a strong rushing game totaling 225 yards. Rookie quarterback Bo Nix completed 16 of 26 passes for 164 yards and ran for 64 yards. Running back Javonte Williams had 14 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns, and also caught three passes for 23 yards.
Denver's defense was fierce. They sacked Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler six times, with linebacker Cody Barton scoring on a 52-yard return of a Rattler fumble. Rattler struggled, losing two fumbles and completing 25 of 35 passes for 172 yards before being replaced by Jake Haener in the fourth quarter.
Alvin Kamara, the Saints' star running back, was held to just 24 yards on 13 touches. The Broncos improved to 4-3, while the Saints fell to 2-5, extending their losing streak to five games.
