Rivers Losing Breath: How Pollution and Heat Are Threatening Water Life
Prof. Kun Shi’s team examined river oxygen levels over the past forty years. Their data shows a steady decline worldwide. Tropical waterways are the hardest hit. The findings appeared in Science Advances in May 2026. The study paints a clear picture of a world that is losing breathable water.
The 2011 Oxford gathering warned that overfishing and ocean acidification could collapse marine life in a single generation. The message was clear: cut fossil fuels and stop overfishing. A recent book, 'The Last Breath,' explains how warming, acidifying, and polluted waters are breaking down plankton and coral. These tiny organisms create most of Earth’s oxygen. The book also points out that everyday waste adds nutrients to water. An average person releases about 11 grams of nitrogen and 2 grams of phosphate each day. Up to half of the nitrogen used on farms ends up in rivers and groundwater.
In Florida, farms and chemical fields dump nutrients that fuel toxic algae blooms. During 2017 and 2018, red tide killed manatees, dolphins, turtles, eels, and crabs along the coast. Lake Okeechobee is choked with blue‑green cyanobacteria, a major source of the problem. Rivers also carry a cocktail of poisons. Ammonia, copper, cyanide, phenol, and zinc are common in English rivers, making stretches fishless. The report also notes that about 80 percent of the world’s wastewater flows untreated into waterways.
The idea of planetary boundaries was introduced in the early 1990s. By 2009 scientists listed nine limits that humanity is already crossing. A new review in Limnology and Oceanography links aquatic deoxygenation to those limits, including climate change and biodiversity loss. Lead researcher Erica Ferrer, a Scripps alumna, says the study puts oxygen loss on the global threat map. Co‑author Lisa Levin adds that the problem does not exist alone. The research urges a combined plan to tackle pollution, warming, and over‑exploitation of marine resources.
