Rochester is getting a major sports upgrade. The city council just greenlit the outdoor design for a huge sports and recreation complex. This isn't just any project—it's a $65 million investment, funded by the city's sales tax extension that voters approved last year.
The complex will sprawl across 160 acres east of the Shoppes on Maine. The city snapped up this land from Seneca Foods earlier this year for $5 million. Now, the approved design includes eight artificial turf baseball/softball fields, two soccer fields, and a dozen pickleball courts. The artificial surfaces will let teams play longer into the season, adding 4-6 extra weeks of action.
But it's not just about sports. The plan also features a central gathering spot with restrooms, concessions, a playground, and a plaza. There will also be walking and biking trails that connect to the Willow Creek Trail. This means the complex will be a hub for both sports and community activities.
Not everyone on the city council was on board, though. The vote was 5-2, with two councilmembers voting against it. Their main concern? Making sure these facilities are truly accessible to everyone in the community. Construction is set to kick off in November, with an opening date slated for May 2027.
The outdoor phase is just the beginning. The indoor part of the complex is next, but funding for that hasn't been figured out yet. This project is a big deal for Rochester, but it's also a reminder that big plans need careful thought to make sure they benefit everyone.
