Nick Saban's retirement from coaching took many by surprise, but his new role on College GameDay has been a welcome change for everyone involved. Alabama's head coach, Kirby Smart, can attest to this. Smart has known Saban for years, and he's thrilled to see his former boss enjoying his time in front of the camera. In fact, Smart thinks Saban's passion for the game is evident on TV.
The Georgia head coach recently commented on Saban's performance on GameDay, saying, "He's extremely thorough and enjoys what he does. I'm thrilled that he gets the opportunity to do what he wants to do and be with the people he wants to be with – his family and all that. " Smart praised Saban's dedication to his work, adding that it makes college football better.
Rece Davis, the host of College GameDay, also had kind words for Saban. According to Davis, Saban is phenomenally engaged, constantly learning, and always striving for perfection. Davis even mentioned that Saban has never come across as someone who feels entitled because of his impressive résumé and championship rings.
Saban's next appearance on TV won't be about coaching a team or competing against his former peers. Instead, he'll be in the booth, sharing his expertise and insight about the game. This time, his focus will be on the team Alabama is facing, not on the wins and losses. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, a Heisman contender, will be the main focus of Saban's analysis. Smart has seen what Milroe can do firsthand, having faced him in the 2023 SEC Championship Game.
Smart thinks Milroe's skills are unique and almost impossible to simulate. According to him, Milroe has the ability to think quickly on his feet and make plays in stressful situations. Smart even compared Milroe to a video game character, saying it's unrealistic to expect any simulation to come close to the real thing.
