The Sanford High School volleyball team showed true grit and determination in their match against Monte Vista. Despite a slow start, the Mustangs managed to pull off a thrilling five-set victory. Monte Vista took the first set, but Sanford fought back to win the next three, securing their win with a final set score of 15-9. The match was intense from the start. Monte Vista jumped to an early lead in the first set, but Sanford refused to back down. The Mustangs made a comeback, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Pirates' strong start. The second set was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading points. Sanford finally took the lead and held on to win the set. The third set was another close match, with both teams refusing to give an inch. Monte Vista took an early lead, but Sanford fought back, tying the score at 3-3. The Pirates regained the lead, but the Mustangs answered with a 5-0 run to take the lead back. The set went back and forth until Monte Vista finally won 25-23. Sanford came out strong in the fourth set, taking a 9-1 lead. Monte Vista tried to close the gap, but the Mustangs went on a 6-1 run to increase their lead. The Pirates narrowed the deficit, but Sanford's Claire Crowther slammed a kill to give the Mustangs a 25-13 win. The fifth and final set was another close match. Monte Vista took an early lead, but Sanford answered with a 4-0 run to take the lead. The Pirates closed the gap, but the Mustangs pushed the lead to 13-7. Monte Vista scored two points, but Sanford scored the final two for a 15-9 win. Avery Koenig led the Sanford offense with 36 assists, while Claire Crowther led the hitting game with 14 kills. The Mustangs also served up 18 aces, with Rose Schwartz leading with nine. Monte Vista's Evie Hinds led the offense with 22 assists, and Janessa Marquez was the hitting leader with 13 kills. Sanford ends the season with 19 wins and three losses, and they are ready to tackle the postseason. Monte Vista, with an 11-6 record, will participate in the Buena Vista Invitational this weekend. Both teams are looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.
