Sarasota’s Big Night: A Fundraiser That Keeps Arts Alive
Sarasota, Florida, USATue Apr 07 2026
The 24th annual gala hosted by the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation pulled in almost $1. 4 million, a win for programs that touch more than 40, 000 people each year with arts education and community outreach.
A crowd of over 340 guests filled the venue, where the star was Tony‑Award winner Idina Menzel. The event was led by board member Jim Matras and Melba Ramirez, who helped guide the evening’s flow.
During the ceremony, Jim and Susan Travers received the 2026 Patron of the Arts Award for their long‑term leadership in Sarasota’s creative scene.
The highlight for many was the Appleton Award announcement, which recognizes teachers who weave art into their classrooms across the Gulf Coast. This year’s winners—Stephanie Cavalier from North Port High School, Mary Ward of Ashton Elementary, and teaching artist Monessa Salley—earned cash prizes to further their professional growth.
All funds raised support the foundation’s educational projects and the nearby Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, ensuring that future generations can experience transformative art.
The foundation’s mission is to make arts accessible and inspiring for everyone, and this gala proved that community generosity can turn a night of celebration into lasting cultural impact.
