The Senate is close to passing a deal that could finally put an end to the government shutdown that started back in October. This deal would keep the government running until the end of January. However, it's not all smooth sailing, as Democrats had to make some compromises to get here.
The big issue that's been holding everything up? Those enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits. Democrats wanted them extended, but they didn't get that in this deal. Instead, there's a promise for a vote on it in December. More than 20 million Americans rely on these credits to make their health insurance more affordable.
So, why are Democrats on board with this? Well, at least eight Democratic senators are supporting the deal, which means it has enough votes to pass. Sen. Tim Kaine from Virginia is one of them. He says this deal is a step toward fixing the health care mess and protecting federal workers.
The deal was worked out with some key players, including Majority Leader John Thune, the White House, and a few Democratic senators. The Senate has been stuck for weeks because Republicans wanted to pass a short-term funding bill without addressing the ACA tax credits. Democrats weren't having it, as they wanted those subsidies extended.
Under this deal, Democrats get to choose which bill is voted on in December. There's also a focus on protecting federal workers. All layoffs during the shutdown would be reversed, and there would be no forced layoffs until the end of fiscal year 2026. Plus, federal workers would get their normal pay, even if they weren't allowed to work during the shutdown.
The deal also includes some other important stuff, like funding the SNAP program, which helps feed 42 million Americans, through September. And it sets up a bipartisan budget process to avoid these kinds of shutdowns in the future.
But let's be real, this is just a temporary fix. The fight over health care isn't over, and there's still a lot of work to be done. The deal still needs to pass the House and get signed into law before the shutdown officially ends. So, while this is a step in the right direction, it's not the final answer.
