This: a massive sled dog race, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, had to change its starting point at the last minute. Why? The weather, of course!
The race was originally set to begin in Duluth, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Temperatures soared to nearly 50 degrees Fahrenheit on February 24th. This caused a lot of snow to melt, making the usual starting point unusable.
So, where did they move it to? Two Harbors. This change wasn't easy, but the organizers are grateful for the support from the new location and the volunteers who make the race happen.
With the change in location, the race needs more helping hands. Volunteers are needed to assist at the new starting line and various checkpoints along the course. The race organizers are also looking for monetary donations to cover grooming fees and other expenses.
But wait, there's more! The opening ceremonies are still happening in Duluth. On March 1st, from 8 am to 1 pm, spectators can meet the dogs, learn about mushing, and even participate in a silent auction. The bib draw, where mushers find out their starting time and lineup, will take place from 3 - 5 pm at the Buffalo House.
This isn't the first time the race has faced challenges. It was already postponed from its original January date. But the organizers have shown resilience and adaptability, ensuring the race remains safe and competitive.
The race is a testament to the spirit of the Northland. Despite the challenges, the community comes together to make it happen. This is what makes the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon so special.
