Slovenia’s New Centre‑Right Team Takes the Helm
Slovenia, LjubljanaFri Jun 05 2026
The parliament has voted to give power to a new government led by Janez Jansa.
Jansa, who has been compared to Trump‑style populists, won a fourth term after a tight March election that left no clear winner.
He promises lower taxes, smarter spending and a fight against corruption.
The cabinet is made up of 15 ministers. Most come from Jansa’s SDS party, with a few chosen from partner groups such as NSi, the Democrats and Focus. The fifth coalition partner, SLS, does not hold a ministerial post.
Together the five parties control 43 of the 90 seats in parliament and are also backed by the right‑wing Resnica party, which is not formally part of the government. Representatives of national minorities also support the new team.
During his speech, Jansa called the ministers “experienced executives” and vowed to reduce what he described as “record‑high taxes. ” He also said he would cut bureaucracy and give more power to local governments.
He invited opposition parties to join a partnership next week to help shape key laws, saying cooperation is essential.
Experts think this government will move Slovenia’s foreign policy in a different direction. The previous administration had recognised a Palestinian state and imposed travel bans on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and two of his ministers.
