In the United States, around 38. 1 million people live with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This condition can lead to serious health problems like heart disease and kidney disease if not managed well. Managing T2DM involves taking care of oneself through regular physical activity and a healthy diet.
A recent study looked at how physically active Americans with T2DM are and how much fruit and vegetables they eat. The study also examined how these habits affect their overall health. The data came from surveys conducted in 2015, 2017, and 2019, involving adults aged 30 to 75 years old with T2DM.
The findings showed that a significant number of people with T2DM are not as active as they should be. About 36. 9% are physically inactive, and 16. 2% do not get enough exercise. Additionally, over half of the participants ate two or fewer servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
Despite these challenges, the study found that even small increases in physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake can lead to better health outcomes. For example, people who were somewhat active reported better overall health compared to those who were completely inactive. Similarly, those who ate a few more servings of fruits and vegetables felt healthier.
The study also found that being more active was linked to a lower risk of heart disease and kidney disease. However, eating more fruits and vegetables did not seem to affect the risk of heart disease. The researchers noted that people with kidney disease often have specific dietary restrictions, which might explain why fruit and vegetable intake did not show a clear impact on kidney health.
One of the key takeaways from this study is that even small improvements in lifestyle can make a big difference in the health of people with T2DM. The researchers suggest that doctors should focus on helping their patients make gradual, achievable changes rather than expecting perfection.
