Smartphones Help Patients Recover Faster
Over 900,000 people in the United States get a special heart procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) every year. But even after the procedure, some patients still don't get the right information to take care of themselves at home. This can lead to readmissions to the hospital, which is bad news for patients and their families.
The problem is that doctors and nurses often don't have enough time to teach patients everything they need to know before they leave the hospital. So, researchers came up with a clever idea: what if they used smartphones to deliver video-based education to patients after their PCI procedure? This way, patients could watch videos on their phones and learn how to take care of themselves at home.
A team of researchers tested this idea at a big hospital in the United States. They took 81 patients who had undergone PCI and divided them into two groups. One group got the usual written instructions, while the other group got the smartphone video education. The researchers then tracked the patients' progress over the next few weeks to see how they were doing.
The results were amazing! Patients who watched the videos on their smartphones were much less likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days. They also took their medications correctly more often and made healthier lifestyle choices. The researchers think that using smartphones to deliver video-based education is a great way to help patients recover faster and healthier after a PCI procedure.
