Smoother Path for Reno Bars to Host Late-Night Shows
Reno, USAFri May 22 2026
Reno is testing a new rule that could let new bars in downtown and Midtown play live music late without jumping through old hoops. Instead of paying five grand and waiting months for a special permit, these businesses might get a faster track to keep the music going past 11 p. m. inside their doors. But if the band is outside after 10 p. m. , the old red tape still applies.
Right now, any bar with indoor live tunes past bedtime needs a conditional-use permit. That permit means a public meeting, stacks of paperwork, and a five-thousand-dollar fee that can drag on for up to three months. Tyler Colton, who runs a Midtown spot, told city leaders this system creates a messy patchwork of rules. “One place could only have two string instruments twice a week, ” he said. “That kind of rule makes no sense and shuts down competition. ” Such uneven playing fields make it tough for new bars to grow or even stay open on the same hours as their neighbors.
The city’s new 18-month pilot program aims to fix that by cutting the red tape for brand-new bars. Each one would have to file a stronger security plan, which police and city planners would approve before green-lighting late-night beats. The hope? More businesses will open and bring back the buzz of a town that never sleeps. Existing bars, however, stay locked into the old system—the pilot is for fresh faces only.
Backstage, city staff see this as a chance to measure whether fewer rules actually attract new business. Angela Fuss, a city planner, said the goal is to see if the simpler process lures entrepreneurs to downtown and Midtown. If the test run goes well, Reno could turn the temporary rules into permanent ones. Until then, the city will watch noise complaints, late-night calls, and crowds to decide if the change sticks.
