Sony, a major player in the tech industry, has just raised its sales forecast for the fiscal year 2025. The new target is set at 12. 7 trillion yen, slightly higher than the previous 12. 6 billion yen goal. Despite this increase, the company's operating profit expectation remains unchanged at 1. 3 trillion yen.
During the September quarter, Sony's gaming business showed impressive growth. The company's game and network services division, which includes the popular PlayStation brand, saw a revenue boost of 11% year-over-year, reaching 1 trillion yen. This success can be attributed to the shift towards digital game purchases and the PlayStation Plus subscription service.
However, hardware shipments haven't been as strong. The PlayStation 5, Sony's latest console, sold 3. 8 million units during the quarter, a 22% decrease from the same period last year. Analysts believe this decline is due to a weak console market with fewer excitement-generating games available.
On the software side, Sony reported a 28% jump in game sales for the quarter, totaling 612. 3 million yen. This growth indicates that while hardware sales may be sluggish, gamers are still actively buying and playing games.
In response to the market conditions, Sony recently launched the upgraded PlayStation 5 Pro. This new console features improved graphics and artificial intelligence capabilities, promising faster gameplay rendering and sharper image clarity. Analysts are hopeful that this upgrade will reignite interest in the PS5, especially with the upcoming release of highly anticipated games like Grand Theft Auto VI.
Looking ahead, the gaming sector is expected to improve next year. The launch of a new Nintendo Switch model and the release of Grand Theft Auto VI are anticipated to drive growth. Sony's strategic move with the PlayStation 5 Pro could position the company well to capitalize on these upcoming opportunities.
