Sound Waves Zap Skin Lesions - Does This Tech Actually Work?
Scientists took a close look at a treatment that uses sound waves to destroy skin problems. The method is called high-frequency high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HF-HIFU for short. It sends ultrasound energy into the skin to heat and kill abnormal tissue without cutting anything open.
The review checked 15 different studies with 92 patients total. All patients got treated with a 20-MHz HF-HIFU device designed for skin use. Researchers wanted to know how well this approach works for three types of skin issues: harmless growths, pre-cancerous spots, and actual cancerous lesions.
For cancer-related lesions, the results looked strong at first. About 96 percent of malignant lesions seemed to disappear right after treatment. But researchers warned the evidence is thin. Most studies lacked comparison groups, so nobody really knows if other treatments would do better or worse.
Pre-cancerous spots called actinic keratosis responded well too. More than 70 percent cleared up completely. The rest usually showed partial improvement, meaning the spots got smaller even if they did not vanish entirely.
Harmless lesions were trickier. Superficial tumors on the skin surface responded best. Deeper growths buried in the skin proved harder to eliminate. The treatment worked fine when the problem sat close to the surface, but struggled when doctors needed to reach further down.
Pain levels varied a lot depending on where on the body doctors treated. Working near the head and neck or on fingers and toes hurt more than other body parts. Bigger treatment areas also meant more discomfort. Fortunately, any side effects that appeared were temporary and expected. Nobody reported serious complications.
The main drawbacks? Most follow-up periods were short, and doctors rarely confirmed results by examining tissue under a microscope afterward. That makes it hard to say how long the benefits actually last or whether problems might come back later.
The bottom line is that HF-HIFU looks like a useful tool for certain skin lesions, especially surface-level growths. But the medical field needs bigger studies with longer tracking and routine tissue verification before calling it a standard treatment option.
