In a recent development, a South Korean court decided not to hold former finance minister Choo Kyung-ho in custody. This decision came as prosecutors were looking into his role in the brief martial law imposed by former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The Seoul Central District Court explained that there was not enough proof to suggest Choo would run away or hide evidence. They also noted that Choo had been cooperating with his lawyer, which made detention unnecessary.
This case is part of a larger investigation into the martial law declaration by Yoon. Several high-ranking officials from Yoon's administration, including the former defense minister and the ex-head of the national spy agency, have already been arrested.
Just last month, the special prosecutor team asked for a 15-year prison sentence for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. They claimed Han helped Yoon during the short period of martial law.
The court's decision to not detain Choo raises questions about the strength of the evidence against him. It also highlights the ongoing scrutiny of Yoon's administration and the actions taken during that time.
